Aerovex Systems’ 3-Zone Protection is a scientifically-backed approach designed to capture contaminants at their source, purify the room air, and ensure building-wide ventilation.

As a business owner,  you must take action to ensure you’re providing everyone, employees and clients alike, with a safe and comfortable fresh air environment.

The Breathing Zone

Contaminants like service-related particulates, debris, VOCs, and pathogens from salon and studio stations can spread and cause health issues. Protecting air quality at the source is crucial for respiratory health.

Think of the breathing zone as a beach ball sized sphere directly in front of your mouth and nose from which we take every breath. When working with clients, that sphere includes their breathing space too.

The Room Zone

The room zone is your entire service area – whether that is a small, single chair studio, or a large salon facility with multiple spaces and zones for hair, nails, and lashes.

Approximately 20-25% of service-related particulates, debris, chemical vapors, and odors will not be caught by a source capture system because of various levels of crosswind from open windows, open doors, blowing fans, and people moving through work areas.

The Building Zone

Every building has ventilation that allows clean air to circulate throughout. That also means airborne contaminants from your business can easily spread into your storage, breakout areas, or neighbor’s facilities.

While you may not be able to influence the building’s entire ventilation, addressing air circulation in and out of your space can make a significant difference for you, and for other businesses in the building.

Taking Action to Preserve Air Quality in the Three Zones

Now that you know about the three zones that make up Salon 3-Zone Protection, let’s take a look at some general ways you can preserve air quality in each area.

Many don’t realise the importance of proper salon ventilation for minimising inhalation exposure to potentially irritating or harmful substances. Proper ventilation can also greatly improve the salon environment for customers and create a safer, more pleasant workplace for salon professionals.

Zone 1: Protection at the Breathing Zone

Salon and Salon Suite workstations are the source of the majority of chemical vapors, debris, and particulates in the air. You may assume that the immediate danger is kept to the small space only around the workstation, however, much more is sent into the air beyond the immediate service area and steadily spreads around the room simply from people moving around. Open windows and doors or blowing fans are not proper salon ventilation control measures – they only contribute to the movement of vapors and debris.

Zone 1 is an invisible, “beach ball”-sized sphere (roughly two feet in diameter) that sits directly in front of your mouth and nose.

Because you draw every breath from this specific space, this is where your exposure to airborne contaminants is at its absolute highest.

Aerovex source capture systems are specifically engineered to protect this critical area. They safely pull harmful airborne pollutants directly away from your breathing zone before they can be inhaled, including:

  • Nail product vapors
  • Keratin fumes
  • Adhesive off-gassing
  • Fine nail dust

Other actions to take right now in the Breathing Zone:

  • Use trash cans with self-opening lids. Cotton swabs and chemical waste still release harmful vapors even after disposal. Swept up dust and debris can still be caught up in the room’s airflow.
  • Keep all product containers tightly closed when not in use.
  • Thoroughly sanitize service stations and tools. Clean down after every customer and sanitize. Autoclave and sanitize tools, or use single use.
  • Use the right masks. Use an N95 rated dust mask to prevent particulate & dust inhalation exposure. Surgical style masks do Not! Airwave 4800 N95 rated masks are also available which filter out product vapors and fumes.
  • Source Capture System filters should contain an activated carbon filter with a minimum of 2 pounds of activated carbon.
  • Regularly clean and change any filters in line with manufacturer advice. Order extras to have on hand, and use Subscribe & Save to make it easy!

Zone 2: Protection in the Room

The entire room—whether it’s a high-energy hair salon, a focused nail studio, or a meticulous lash suite, is the next critical area of protection. In multi-service environments, “cross-contamination” is a constant challenge; for example, fine hairspray aerosols from a styling station can easily drift across the room and affect the air quality in the nail or lash areas. Even with high-quality source capture in place, approximately 20-25% of service-related contaminants escape Zone 1 due to natural air disturbances like employee and client movement, open doors, or cross-winds from fans.

In hair settings, this results in lingering hairspray aerosols and chemical mists, while nail and lash studios deal with persistent chemical VOCs and adhesive odors. To ensure a truly professional and safe environment, it is vital to eliminate these escaped pollutants with a room air purifier engineered specifically for the beauty industry. We recommend Aerovex’s award winning The One That Works™ with PCO Technology for high-volume, multi-station salons or the Aerovex Max Dual Core Wall Mounted Air Purifier for boutique studios and private suites, ensuring every breath in your space is clean, safe, and comfortable.

Other actions to take right now in the Room Zone:

  • Ensure cleaning practices cover the entire room – all surfaces, containers, devices, and the floor.
  • Partitioning stations can reduce the spread of airborne substances. Even low partitions that don’t completely block the view can be beneficial.
  • Install suitable filtration & ventilation for the room size.
  • Avoid using ozone‐generating air-cleaning devices.
  • Use professional HEPA room air filtration systems; avoid devices designed for home use and only use air cleaners in conjunction with a source capture system.
  • Regularly clean and change any filters in line with manufacturer advice. Order extras to have on hand, and use Subscribe & Save to make it easy!

Zone 3: Protection at the Building

The building’s ventilation system should be your final line of defense, but it is often the most overlooked. In a typical salon or studio, the HVAC system is designed to recirculate air to maintain temperature—but simply moving “salon air” from one room to another isn’t enough. To ensure a truly healthy environment, your ventilation system shouldn’t just move air; it must clean it.

Without proper filtration at the building level, chemical vapors and “neighborhood odors” can easily spread into your reception area, breakrooms, or even into adjacent businesses connected through the shared ductwork. Whether you are dealing with the pungent scent of perm solutions, the sharp smell of acrylic monomers, or the invisible off-gassing of lash adhesives, these contaminants require more than a standard hardware-store filter.

Best Practice Advice: Upgrade your building’s current ventilation with a filter engineered for the beauty industry. Standard home filters are designed for household dust and dander; they cannot capture the complex volatile organic compounds (VOCs) found in professional salons.

The Dust Plus® HVAC Filter filter is a professional-grade, easy-to-use solution that you can install yourself into your existing HVAC system. Unlike generic filters, Dust Plus® utilizes activated carbon to specifically target and eliminate “salon-specific odors” and vapors that standard filters miss. By trapping these particles at the building source, you ensure that the air being recirculated back into your workstations, hair chairs, and lash beds is fresh and decontaminated.

Our Commitment to Your Setup: When you order through Aerovex, we work with you directly to ensure you receive the exact filter size required for your specific building unit, providing a seamless fit for maximum protection.

Other actions to take right now in the Building Zone:

  • Where possible, salons should have their own ventilation systems and avoid sharing with adjacent businesses.
  • Turn on all general ventilation systems (HVAC) during work hours.
  • Equip each room with suitable ventilation.
  • Keep doors closed in non-work areas.
  • Implement a sanitation schedule.
  • Regularly clean and change any filters in line with manufacturer advice. Order extras to have on hand, and use Subscribe & Save to make it easy!
